Frequently Asked Questions

How much digital video can be stored on a normal 20-gigabyte hard drive?
Network IP Cameras are equipped with an advanced compression technology that can store almost a month of continuous video on a 20-gigabyte hard drive.

What are the different LEDs for?
The red is for power (left side), the green is for network activity (right side) the green in the middle is for network link, the red flashing light on the front of the camera let s you know someone is viewing the camera.

What is the green plug on the back of the camera for?
It is a standard I/O connector for a variety of devices like alarms, IR sensors, and switches that will trigger the camera.

What is the black cable with the 9 pin serial connector for?
It is used to connect the camera directly to a computer for configuration through any standard terminal emulation program (hyper terminal).

Does the camera support Power over Ethernet?
Yes, the camera works with our power over Ethernet injector and splitter (Intellinet PN 521451). Power over Ethernet is very useful when a power source is not close by.

How many users can view the camera at once?
The camera can support up to 43 simultaneous users.

Why does the number of concurrent users differ from camera to camera?
It varies between 26 and 43 simply because of the cameras memory and the various features that may or may not be in use

How does the built-in motion detection work?
It very simply compares what it sees now to what it saw in the last frame and based on a sensitivity you select will trigger an event. The event can be to send an email, to send an image to a FTP server, or to send a series of images (before and after the motion is detected) to an email address or a FTP server-all with software built into the camera, nothing else is required.

What port does the camera use to send the Images? Can I change the port used?
The camera uses a web server port and an image transfer port; the camera uses port 80 as a web server port and port 8080 as an image transfer port. Please note that both ports must be opened or forwarded to have access to the camera. Both he web server port and the image transfer port are adjustable from the admin menu of the camera.

Does the camera work behind a firewall?
Yes, if you are trying to view the camera from behind your firewall (i.e., the firewall is on the viewer side), simply click the my computer is behind a firewall  on the log in screen. If the camera to be viewed is behind a firewall, you must open the web server and the image transfer ports to the camera, both these ports are adjustable.

How do I reset the camera to factory defaults?
There are two ways to reset the camera to its factory defaults (if you forget the passwords, for example), one is to connect the camera directly to a computer with the attached serial cable. Connect the camera to a serial port of a PC, launch hyper terminal, power on the camera and a menu will appear. Press ?  for a list of commands, pressing w  at the command prompt will reset the camera to its factory defaults. The other method is to power off the camera, and using a paper clip, click the reset button on the bottom of the camera. Hold the reset button while powering on the camera, hold the reset button until the middle green LED on the camera begins to blink, the camera will be reset to factory defaults. Please note that all settings, including triggered events, FTP image transfers, and image configuration will be lost/reset.

Can I password protect the camera? How many different users can be set up to access the camera? Can I have more than one administrator?
The camera can be password protected. You can set up to six different users with passwords and any or all can be given admin rights or just viewing rights.

How do I upgrade the cameras firmware? How can I tell what version of firmware my camera currently has?
Upgrading the firmware is a very simple process, we have a upgrade utility that does all the work for you! Simply download the upgrade utility, run the .exe file and it will ask for the IP address of the camera to be upgraded, the admin user name and password, and the location of the new firmware. (You must also download the new firmware). Once all the information is entered, click start upgrade and the cameras memory will be erased, the new firmware will be written and verified, and you will get a message stating the upgrade is successful when completed.
